NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

The REA Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has a fully developed, high standard and international level Neonatal Section, with three Care Unit levels (Ι, ΙΙ & ΙΙΙ), meaning basic, special and intensive care), two negative pressure isolation rooms, parenteral nutrition preparation room with Laminar Air Flow, room for preparation of special milk formulas, breastfeeding room and a special area for long-term follow up of newborn patients in the section.

The Unit is fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to monitor, support and handle even the most difficult full-term and extremely low birth weight premature infants (ΕLBW<1000gr). The NICU is staffed with highly trained and experienced medical and nursing personnel with standards numerically corresponding to international requirements.

The NICU also collaborates with highly skilled, accredited scientific specialists on a permanent basis, for scientific coverage and treatment of emergency cases and scheduled check-ups (pediatric radiologist, pediatric neurologist, pediatric pulmonologist, pediatric ophthalmologist, pediatric surgeon, pediatric endocrinologist, pediatric gastroenterologist, pediatric orthopedic specialist, geneticist, etc.). All newborns can receive parenteral nutrition if necessary and there is a systematic measurement of the levels of medicines administered.

The NICU is equipped with advanced technology respiratory support equipment (such as HFO, NO, SiPAP, nCPAP ), monitors connected to central stations, oximeters, parenteral fluid pumps, medicine dispensing syringe pumps, blood product pumps and advanced technology ultrasound devices.

The knowledge, expertise and direct communication of NICU staff, the scientific support and immediate treatment of newborns and processing of information as well as keeping parents informed while providing encouragement and support are key in ensuring the best possible outlook for premature and sick babies in the REA Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
